San Francisco Media Advocates
Since 1986, Access SF has been at the center of public dialogue around cable franchise issues. As part of our mission, we maintain an active leadership role as a front line advocate of public interest telecomm policy for San Francisco. Since summer 2002, we've been a co-convener with other concerned nonprofits of an unprecedented local coalition, San Francisco Media Advocates that has come together to ensure that a public sector voice is being represented in all aspects of local telecomm policy. The group is focused on the upcoming 2009 negotiations for the cable franchise renewal with Comcast, which constitute the City's first opportunity for an outright renewal since the 1960s.
The San Franciscans
2003 WAVE Award winner! Now in its fourth year, The San Franciscans community outreach project serves as the station's anchor for programming and production that is geared towards nonprofit engagement with public access television. Through a coordinated program of outreach, training, production and promotion, Access SF staff and board come together to support local nonprofits with various projects that support their use of media, including the production of public service announcements and an award winning in-house talk show series that profiles key services and resources.
League of Women Voters of San Francisco
Since 2003, Access SF and the League of Women Voters of San Francisco have built and maintained a successful on-going partnership to provide quality non-partisan media coverage in advance of local elections. To date, more than 120 hours of original televised pro/con discussions, candidate debates and community issue forums has resulted from the collaboration.
Project Inform and Cable Positive
In October 2003, Cable Positive, the Cable and Telecommunications Industry's HIV/AIDS action organization, awarded Access SF a $5,000 production grant through its prestigious Tony Cox Community Fund. The grant was used to support Access SF's production of an original, 30-second public service announcement (PSA) for Project Inform's National HIV/AIDS Treatment Information Hotline - 1-866-HIV-INFO. The PSA premiered locally on Cable Channel 29 in conjunction with World AIDS Day, December 1, 2003 and has been airing regularly ever since. As part of the grant, Access SF assisted Project Inform with efforts to circulate the PSA across the region and nation during 2004.
San Francisco LGBT Center
Access SF and the San Francisco LGBT Center have been significant partners since 2002, when both of our facilities opened. We have collaborated on events, such as the 2004 Community Technology Network Spring Conference and on video production and training.
Connections for Tomorrow
In 2003, Access SF was one of 50 nonprofits in California chosen to receive this capacity building award made available by the Department of Health and Human Services. The program has enabled Access SF to work with various mentors, organizations and consulting firms on best practices and issues related to technology planning and accessibility planning.
