PUBLIC ACCESS TELEVISION ~ A viable resource for social change
Dear Friend of Community Media:

Can you imagine a scenario whereby access to the tools of media and television can make a difference in the lives of San Franciscans?

We certainly do at Access SF/Cable Channel 29. It is part and parcel of our daily work as the City's designated, non-profit manager of public access television.

Take the story of Brotha Clint, one of San Francisco’s most committed youth advocates:

Earlier this year, Brotha Clint approached Access SF to collaborate on a training program involving a group of young, African American males from the Hunters Point/Bay View neighborhood. For the station, our in-house staff provided NO-COST training in i-Movie and related digital production. At Access SF, Brotha Clint's youth team was exposed to a state-of-the-art television environment, media literacy tools, field production principles and more.

In recounting the collaboration, Access SF's Executive Director, Zane Blaney shares a powerful anecdote that helps to frame the urgency that surrounds community media training and partnerships. He states, “According to Brotha Clint, one of his youth participants had been offered the chance to start selling drugs on the same day he was offered the chance to get involved with making a video at public access. He chose to make video.”

In a letter to Access SF, Brotha Clint writes, “Thank you for the support of the young men here in San Francisco who are attempting to free themselves from the cycles of violence that have permeated our most precious resource, their minds.” He continues, “My team is now prepared to embark upon this fantastic voyage called television production, thanks to the dedication and professionalism of Access SF/Cable 29.”

For our part, the station is grateful to Brotha Clint for the opportunity to collaborate in such a meaningful way and to demonstrate HOW PUBLIC ACCESS TELEVISION IS A VIABLE RESOURCE FOR SOCIAL CHANGE. His is just one of so many life-changing stories that unfold at public access throughout the year.

In 2005, Access SF is gearing up for one its greatest challenges to date - San Francisco's renewal of its cable franchise with Comcast Cable. In this pivotal year of impending change, every dollar counts; and your support helps send a message to Comcast that you see value in the important services we provide.

Won't you consider helping Access SF build a sustainable future for community media that benefits all San Franciscans? Please take a moment to review the below options for making a year-end gift in support of public access television.

Thank you, in advance, for your vote of confidence and your faith in the transformative power of community media. We are the vehicle for your stories, and to be sure, storytellers hold the keys to the future.

With kind regards,
--
