SUMMER '03 YOUTH PROGRAMS: Special trainings & collaborations
- YOUTH-IN-ACTION: A program of the SF Conservation Corps, based in the Mission District

As part of its annual Summer Media Institute, Youth-In-Action brought fifteen Latino youth, ages 12-16, into the Access SF facility for a series of hands-on workshops & learning opportunities. The training included an overview of public access, an introduction to the main TV studio, a media literacy section, and (2) HOW-TO style coaching sessions that covered on-camera appearances and tips to improve field production. For their final session, Access SF staff assisted the group with the realization of a 30-minute talk show on the growing environmental concerns of trash in the City. Several youth had produced their own video content throughout the summer that served as helpful roll-in for their final, live-to-tape program, which was presented on Cable Channel 29 during August 2003. Access SF staff members Alice Yu & Jan Levine worked with Eva Myers, Youth-In-Action's Media Program Manager on this first successful youth collaboration.

- 411 SUMMERFEST FOR YOU BY YOU(TH)

Access SF staff member Marc Smolowitz served on the Organizing Committee of the 411 SUMMERFEST FOR YOU BY YOU(TH), a first time arts and culture festival for youth and families - presented by Just Think Foundation on August 16th, 2003 at Cellspace in the Mission District. The process brought together staff contacts from 12 local nonprofits to serve as mentors and work direclty with a team of youth interns responsible for all aspects of the festival. Access SF supported 411 Summerfest interns with marketing and public relations, press contacts and press release writing, and strategies for community outreach.

BOARD OF DIRECTORS: Recruitment yields diversity, leadership, and community expertise
Following a period of substantial outreach and recruitment, the Access SF Board of Directors welcomed (5) new members in early Summer 2003. Carmelita Harris, a long time producer on Cable Channel 29, joined the Board as the designated Producer Representative. April Elkjer, Cecilia Shepard, Allan Silva and John Tunui joined the Board as community representatives, with Tunui also being currently active as a producer who submits specials. Notably, all five new members represent communities of color, ranging from mixed race to Asian-Pacific Islander to Polynesian to African American. In its 2003-2004 configuration, the Access SF Board is one of the most diverse in the history of the organization.

CONNECTIONS FOR TOMORROW: Capacity building award for technology planning
Access SF was one of 50 California-based nonprofits chosen to receive this new capacity building award through CTCNet and the Department of Health and Human Services. The award consisted of consulting services from three leading agencies that provide technology planning assistance, accessibility evaluation & training, and assistive technology tools, including:

CompuMentor - a leading technology consultant based in SF that donated 36+ hours of professional time with a technology planner who worked with staff on an overall technology plan for the organization.

Alliance for Technology Access (ATA) - a national organization based in San Rafael focused on accessibility issues for nonprofits. The station received various important resources from ATA at no-cost, including a complimentary annual membership. A group of staff and board representatives attended a daylong training on accessibility in San Francisco during August 2003.

Center for Accessible Technology - a leading organization based in Berkeley that helps nonprofits address accessibility issues in the work place and on the web, through the deployment of assistive technology tools. As part of the consultation process, the station's web site was evaluated. And, we received a number of assistive software and hardware tools.

LEAGUE OF WOMEN VOTERS SF: Production collaboration for non-partisan, pre-election TV coverage
In 2003, Access SF entered into a producing partnership with the League of Women Voters SF to provide local audiences with expanded non-partisan, pre-election TV coverage of both candidates and issues coming bfore the voters. For the various 2003 & 2004 elections, this has resulted in over 100 hours of original local programming being produced and presented on Cable Channel 29, SFGTV, and as part of Access SF's video-on-demand web page. The content has included a range of in-house studio productions, including (9) Mayoral Candidate Statements and Pro/Con Discussions covering a vast array of state and local ballot measures.

All Access SF staff members have been helpful contributors to the success of this ongoing production endeavor. Access SF member Alice Yu was the main producer for the series in Fall '03/Spring '04, staff member Jan Levine was the main producer in Fall '04, and staff member Sade Huron has served as the main editor of the series throughout.

- For Fall '03 specifically, Access SF provided all other local candidates for Sheriff, District Attorney and Mayor with an invitation to participate in the station's free speech forum, Open Mic!. With this added component, Cable Channel 29 marked the first time in the history of public access in San Francisco that all candidates for local political office were afforded the opportunity for unmediated, pre-election television coverage.

IHSS ANNUAL CONFERENCE: Outreach to disability & senior nonprofits
In September 2003, Access SF attended the In-Home Support Services (IHSS) Annual Conference in San Francisco as an exhibitor, which yielded unprecedented contact with local advocacy groups and service providers to the City's disabled, seniors, and other homebound populations. The IHSS Conference was the first of several milestones at Access SF on behalf of the local disability community during 2003-2004. Our attendance also helped to jump start the following important planning conversations:

- The future of accessible media on the public access channel.
- The potential to integrate closed and open captioning into playback and production services, including CART real-time reporting.
- Short & long-tem goals for the deployment of assistive technology and related media production tools that can support disabled producers both at the facility and in the field.
