ABOVE & BEYOND: Volunteer Recognition Program
Access SF can only exist because of its vibrant community of volunteers. Time and again, the staff is witness to acts of generosity by station volunteers that go beyond expectation and move us personally. In order to recognize such contributions formally, the station created ABOVE AND BEYOND, a monthly recognition program for volunteers who consistently make a difference at public access. Staff choose two outstanding people to be recipients of an ABOVE AND BEYOND award each month, and several times throughout year, we convene with recipients, their friends and family for a volunteer recognition event at the station, which includes staff producing a studio program in their honor.

Our most recent ABOVE AND BEYOND celebration was on May 29, 2004 (pictured at right.) The following volunteers were recognized by staff for taking the spirit of volunteerism to new heights this past year:

Richard Karat, Cheryl Valenzuela, Michael Faklis, Ian Jensen, Kerry Holeman, Jennifer Padlo, Claudia Reid, Wayne Macintosh, Steve Knoll, Brandon Nash, Regina Hunter, Idell Wilson, Solomon Johnson, Deetje Boler, Barbara Kadri, Rod Laughridge, Meg Dixit, Len Harrison, David Lassman, Bruce Rinehart.

Marinell has been a San Francisco resident for five years.

QUESTION & ANSWER
- What is your background in media?
I am a documentary filmmaker. I created TV / print campaigns for multinational accounts working as an Art Director internationally for advertising agencies.

- How did you become interested in public access?
I was talking to a documentary filmmaker a couple years ago when I mentioned my keen interest in television production. She told me about accessf, and the rest is history.

- What are your goals at public access?
I want to continue honing my skills! Also I hope to continue learning from all the talented, experienced individuals associated with Channel 29.

- What is the difference between access and network television?
I would venture to say it is the wide, uncensored scope of programs available to the viewer. What I truly appreciate at the station is this open exchange of knowledge, the level of professionalism, and the dedication from everyone involved.

- Do you have any comments on the freedom of free speech?
I know people who grew up under dictatorships from Soviet Bulgaria to Iran and their stories left me numb. Working for metropolitan newspapers I learned to value words and how they can be manipulated. The intrinsic principle of our American Constitution is to protect the individualsı freedoms; we should diligently participate in protecting our freedoms! Allow me my freedom of speech and Iıll respect your freedom to listen…or not.

STATION INTERNSHIP PROGRAM
In 2003-2004, Access SF was fortunate to have the volunteer support of a number of talented interns who have given an incredible amount of hours to the station and in many cases function like staff because of their long term continuity and involvement. We'd like to take this opportunity to thank them for their unique contributions to operations at Access SF!

LINDSAY ANDERSON (pictured at right)
The Community Bulletin Board PSAs are kept current and vital thanks to Lindsay, a third year student at the Academy of Art University majoring in Computer Arts and Visual Effects. She is literally one of the longest running interns at the station, having been with us since April 2003.

ELENA REMINGTON (pictured below - top)
The Development Department built its in house knowledge arm with the the aid and skills of Elena, a recent UC Berkeley graduate with a degree in Mass Communications. She also worked with the station on a number of important projects from Jan-June 2004, including the CTN Spring Conference. Elena continues to volunteer at the station on staff productions such as The San Franciscans, the League of Women Voters series and Open Mic!.

ANDY JOLLEY (pictured below - center)
Several staff members and station departments have been helped by Andy, who is currently studying editing and post production at BAVC. He has assisted Zane Blaney and Tom Barkett on a regular basis since April 2004 and continues to volunteer at the station on staff productions such as The San Franciscans, the League of Women Voters series and Open Mic!.

VICKI FONG (pictured below - bottom)
Vicki is currently working with Access SF full time as part of a 6-month volunteer field study. She is in her senior year in the Community Studies program at UC Santa Cruz where she is pursuing a Social Documentation emphasis. At Access SF, she is involved with a number of creative and research driven projects that cross her interests in video production, media literacy and media as a tool for social change. She is currently an incredible asset to every department at the station!

JAMES KENNARD (not pictured)
James is a 15 year old student at International High School who completed a 6-month internship during the first half of 2004. He has recently returned to the station to continue volunteering in Playback.

KEITH MAIN (not pictured)
Keith completed a three month internship with the station in 2003 and has gone on to employment at KRON4. Congratulations!

Thanks, again, for all of your hard work and contributions.
