INTRODUCING ACCESS SF's YOUTH INTERN TEAM - SUMMER '05
Following the recent success of the Cable Channel 29 Youth Media Festival, Access SF is pleased to continue the station's growing commitment to youth involvement in community media with an unprecedented season of youth driven activities. Through various collaborations, Access SF is currently hosting (5) youth interns who are both working as a team and taking the lead on a number of exciting projects.

LUC CHEHABI, age 22 - Luc comes to the station through an international exchange with his business school in Rouen, France. He will be helping produce special events such as producer mixers, a nonprofit open house and a fundraising event. His focus will be in development & marketing.

TIFFANY HSU, age 19 - Tiffany is a sophomore at UC Berkeley majoring in Journalism w/a minor in Women Studies. She is reporter & editor at The Daily Californian and concurrently holds a 2nd internship in newswriting at the SF BAY GUARDIAN. At Access SF, she is working on community outreach, writing about cable franchise issues, and assisting with media relations. She will also work with staff to produce an installment of THE SAN FRANCISCANS on nonprofits working on domestic violence issues.

MARIO BORROTO, age 20 - Mario comes to us through the Workability Program at JVS (Jewish Vocational Service.) He will work with staff member Bobby Watts on (3) youth-focused installments of the in-house program OPEN MIC! Slated for July 21st, August 4th and 18th, these productions will serve as an anchor for youth presence on Channel 29 this summer. (See more info below.)

TRAVIS WAINMAN, age 17 - Travis joins us through The FAITHS Initiative at the San Francisco Foundation, a program that helps youth in the Bay Area find relevant internship opportunities in a range of nonprofit settings.

SHERRY BLUNT, age 17 - Sherry joins us through Spotlight on the Arts, a program of the Arts & Community Development division of California Lawyers for the Arts. "Spotlight" is an arts industry summer job training/placement program for low income youth in S.F. ages 14-22.

Both Travis & Sherry will support Mario on producing the Open Mic! episodes, help with expanding youth outreach & encourage local youth nonprofits to submit PSAs to the Cable Channel 29 Community Bulletin Board.

The Access SF youth intern team has been certified in the Main TV Studio and will be available to volunteer on in-house productions and producer/member shows. This is a model that Access SF plans to foster in the coming months towards sustaining an ongoing youth crew that produces for public access.

REPORT BACK FROM MONTEREY CONFERENCE - YOUTH WEBLOG LAUNCHES
Access SF was out in full force at the 2005 Alliance for Community Media (ACM) National Conference & Trade Show, a key national PEG Access event that recently unfolded in Monterey, CA - July 6-9. Staff members Zane Blaney, Aaron Vinck, and Marc Smolowitz were in attendance at the event. Smolowitz was a presenter on the panel "Innovative Youth Programming & Successful Youth Outreach," part of the Outreach Strategies and Training Track.

YOUTH INTERN PRESENCE IN MONTEREY / LAUNCH OF WEBLOG!
With very special thanks to the efforts of Hye-Jung Park, Director of the Manhattan Neighborhood Network Youth Channel, Access SF was in attendance at this year's Conference with (3) youth of our youth interns, Luc, Tiffany, and Mario. Through a scholarship funded by The Philadelphia Foundation, conference fees, travel, and per diem were covered for (7) youth participants
from San Francisco, New York, Philadelphia and Worcester, MA.

As part of their participation in Monterey, Access SF's youth covered the Conference as community journalists. They focused on workshops about youth, media literacy and media democracy & have started an ongoing weblog as a result. The weblog is an open space for youth interested in media and for youth who want to share ideas and resources about working in media, television, radio, and the arts. For now, interested youth can submit content for posting via email to Tiffany Hsu, tiffany@accessf.org.

HOMETOWN VIDEO AWARDS - FIRST TIME PUBLIC EXHIBITION
The Hometown Video Awards are the ACM's annual juried competition for PEG Access programming, which recognizes excellence & innovation. For the first time in its 25+ year history, the Hometown Awards were presented at the National Conference with a public screening component. This breakthrough event was realized through the initiative of Monterey's local organizing committee. It included (15) screenings held at a local arthouse.
