** Some background on how and why to advocate for public access. **
Funding for public, education and government access (PEG) channels and facilities is never secure, and it is urgent that citizens stay involved, keep informed and make their voice heard at the local, state and federal level.
In 2006, Congress is considering changes to federal telecommunications that could dramatically cutback or even eradicate current funding requirements of cable operators that currently support the vast majority of capital and operation costs associated with community media across the nation.
When considering the value that PEG Channels bring to our local communities, keep in mind that there are over 1,000 such channels arouns the nation. And, here are some revealing national statistics that serve to amplify how important PEG Channels are to our local communities:
• More than 3,000 PEG Channels operate nationwide;
• More than 25,000 hours of new PEG programming is produced weekly — more programming than all other the broadcasters combined;
• PEG Channels engage the regular participation of more than 1.2 million volunteers annually;
• PEG Channels serve more than a quarter million non-profit organizations annually.
